In my last video about Echolalia, several of you mentioned/asked about palilalia. In the medical context Palilalia is: “a complex ti/language disorder characterized by the involuntary repetition of syllables, words, or phrases.”#ActuallyAutistic #AskingAutistics & NeuroDivergent humans: does THIS ever happen to YOU??? | Neurodivergent Rebel

Palilalia is repeating yourself after speaking. In Autistic folks, this is often the last sentence or word - can be in a whisper or may NOT be whispeted. This can be self soothing for a lot of people, a stim, or it could be a way to process language.. or just the brain doin’ all the neurodivergent things. There is no “treatment” because its not a problem - just that its “socially unacceptable.” I think theres some really controversial ways that some professionals use to attempt to diminish this

Chris Wenger - Neurodivergent Speech Therapist on Instagram: "Did you know that repeating your own words or phrases, often involuntarily with a whisper voice, is called palilalia? It’s a speech pattern sometimes seen our autistic students. Unlike echolalia, where someone repeats another person’s words, palilalia is a self-repetition. It’s linked to the brain’s basal ganglia, which plays a role in movement, sensory input, language flow, and emotional regulation. For autistic individuals, palilali

Palilalia vs. Echolalia IF you’ve spent time with JJ, you might have noticed how he communicates in unique and repetitive ways. We often hear people talk about “echolalia” in relation to autism, but JJ also displays something called “palilalia.” These terms describe different speech patterns that are a big part of how he processes the world. • Echolalia is when someone repeats words or phrases they’ve heard from others. For JJ, this often means quoting entire scenes from his favorite movies or r

GET TO KNOW MORE ABOUT PALILALIA Palilalia is the delayed repetition of words or phrases (Benke & Butterworth, 2001; Skinner, 1957) and is emitted by individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. Behavioral research suggests that antecedent conditions can be manipulated to decrease the occurrence of palilalia and that it can be replaced with appropriate responses (Durand & Crimmins, 1987; Frea & Hughes, 1997) - Spontaneous repetition of one’s own words. - It may sound like a stut
