Most people think of a warm-up as something you do to “get loose.” That’s not really the point. The real goal is to wake up the system that controls movement, coordination and energy delivery before you ask it to perform. You’ve felt this before even if you didn’t name it. Think about a single-leg RDL or a balance drill. Your first set is a mess. You wobble. Your foot searches for what feels like a good place to land. Your hips can’t quite find the position. The second set is better. By the thir

Who's going to the gym today? A simple but challenging exercise. Helps with mobility, balance, endurance, and strength in many systems. This will challenge your balance. Don't start too heavy. Enjoy. | Dr. Howard Luks

Have shoulder pain? These Face-Pull exercises are one of my favorites. I try to hang from a bar for 20-30 seconds as a warm-up and to improve my shoulder mobility... then I do three sets of these. Keep your elbow up by your ears. And try to externally rotate your arms at the end. | Dr. Howard Luks

A great jump variation if you're heading to the gym tomorrow morning. So many adaptations here... the jump, the turn (balance and neuromuscular control), the landing (bone mass/deceleration/controlling force), the jump, etc... | Dr. Howard Luks

Many people want to know where to start… How do I build strength and improve the tendons and muscles you expect to propel you for jumps??? Isometric exercises are where you start. Tbh… you should always do them- even if well trained ;-). These are for the quadriceps. You can do both legs or single leg. I hold this position for 40-60 seconds. And I will do that 3 times. Start where you need to. Even if it’s 10 seconds. | Dr. Howard Luks

Far too many do not train to move in different directions. One of the keys to maintaining balance and our ability to conquer the landscape is to train in directions other than straight ahead... You can land on both feet if need be... but work to being on one leg if possible. | Dr. Howard Luks

It’s the landing that matters 😉. Yes, the jump helps with power. But navigating the landing was the goal. | Dr. Howard Luks

Jumping... good for osteoporosis, yes. Even if you have osteoporosis... yes. It's also VERY good to teach you how to absorb load- the landing, then "explode" back up- power. The twist just adds movement control to the programming. Yes... try to stick the landing. Land on bent knees. And try to land in the middle of the box. 8-10-inch boxes work fine. You don't need to go higher than that. Train at low heights first until you're comfortable. | Dr. Howard Luks

A few of you asked for a more challenging core exercise. Training the rotational component of our core is just as important as our abs or low back. Enjoy. | Dr. Howard Luks

It's Thursday... If you're heading to the gym today... Perhaps you want to try this. The goal is a 4-5 second slow descent. If you can stand up on one leg... do it. This is a humbling exercise. Try it with no weight first. The descent is the goal... if you can stand up on that same leg, that is icing on the cake. This face is because this was my 20th rep... LOL. | Dr. Howard Luks
