“Do I really need to do this to myself?” That’s a question many women wonder when diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and faced with surgery and radiation as the current standard treatment. Now, early results of a study led by Duke Cancer Institute surgeon Dr. E. Shelley Hwang reveal DCIS patients who practice “watchful waiting” are no more at risk of developing invasive breast cancer than women who undergo surgery to remove the precancerous cells. The COMET Study was presented at the
