The Damara people speak Damara, which is a member of the wider Khoe-Kwadi language family. This language is distinguished by its distinctive click sounds, which are comparable to those of the San people, another indigenous community in southern Africa. The Damara have a rich oral heritage, with storytelling playing an important role in the transmission of their history and culture.

The Damara People 🇳🇦🇿🇦🇧🇼 Together with the Bushman, the Damara belong to the oldest nations in Namibia. The Damara are thought to be of Bantu origin who speak a Khoisan dialect. It is speculated that the Damara were the first people to migrate to Namibia from the north. Their original culture was a mixture of an archaic hunter-gatherer culture and herders of cattle, goats and sheep. MY BEAUTIFUL CULTURE… The Damara Living Museum gives insight into their history and cultural ways of their ancestors. The museum at Twyfelfontein shows how the Damara community make their own jewellery from Ostrich eggs and animal skins, and how they ferment their beer and produce their knives.
