“It is D.H.S.’s understanding that the Department of the Treasury has qualified law enforcement personnel available to assist with immigration enforcement, especially in light of recent increases to the Internal Revenue Service’s work force and budget,” Ms. Noem wrote.

WASHINGTON (AP) — For years, Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have railed against the IRS and its cadre of armed agents. Now the administration has big plans for them: It wants the agents to assist with immigration enforcement.

The request marks the Trump administration’s latest effort to devote more federal resources to fulfill his campaign pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.

Although the Internal Revenue Service has the responsibility of collecting taxes, some members of the department could soon have more duties added to their roles.
