The program officially ended on Aug. 31, 2024, but earlier this week, Sault MP Terry Sheehan announced that Sault Ste. Marie has been selected to participate in the new, re-named program, called the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP). The Sault has been allocated 300 spots for the current fiscal year.

Police have charged a Sudbury man in relation to a suspicious death on St. Joseph’s Island earlier this month. The deceased, found Jan. 6 in the vicinity of P Line Road, was identified last week as Corey Hynes, 52, of Sudbury. East Algoma OPP said its crime unit has continued to investigate the incident and has now made one arrest.
