Dozens of transgender people, along with their families and allies, gathered outside the Supreme Court on Wednesday as the justices considered a Tennessee law banning access to puberty blockers and hormone therapy for trans minors.

There was a clarifying moment late in Wednesday’s two-and-a-half-hour-long oral argument in United States v. Skrmetti, a history-making challenge to Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

The U.S. Supreme Court tackled a major transgender rights case on Wednesday, and its conservative justices asked tough questions of lawyers challenging the legality of a Republican-backed ban in Tennessee on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors.
