AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) -- The hand recount for Maine’s hotly contested Second Congressional District race starts on Monday in Augusta. Democratic incumbent Congressman Jared Golden was confirmed the winner over Republican challenger Austin Theriault through ranked choice voting.

The state does not require a deposit for a recount if the margin of victory is 1% or less in Congressional races.

A recount is set to begin Monday in. The race went to a ranked-choice runoff after neither candidate surpassed 50 percent of first-choice votes on Election Day, necessitating the shipment of ballots to the state capital for a ranked-choice voting tabulation.
