Over 40 million Americans could lose access to federal food assistance Saturday if the government shutdown continues into November.

Lawmakers in Louisiana approved a resolution Wednesday to allow the state's Department of Health to use up to $150 million in funding for some people who would normally receive SNAP benefits.

Starting October 1, 2025, SNAP beneficiaries in the U.S. experienced a slight increase in their monthly food stamp amounts. These adjustments are in response to inflation and food costs, under the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) mechanism.

In California, which has the largest number of SNAP recipients in the country, Governor Gavin Newsom has confirmed the state is fast-tracking $80 million in funds for food banks, and that the National Guard may also be used to distribute food to those in need.

The USDA says SNAP food benefits will stop on Nov. 1.
