Starting around noon on Wednesday, many Verizon customers discovered that their phones had gone into SOS mode.

Verizon has confirmed that the extreme service outage was not caused by a cybersecurity breach but was some kind of software problem.

"We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers," the post said.
