UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall faced criticism for stopping his fight with Ciryl Gane following an eye poke, sparking debate among fans and MMA experts.

Right after UFC 321, Sonnen stirred backlash by saying Aspinall should have continued despite the injury. “Being poked in the eye is illegal, but to fight with one eye is very common,” he said on ESPN’s post-fight show. “In all fairness, you’re the heavyweight champion of the world, you’ve got to fight with one eye at times.”

UFC 321 went down last Saturday (Oct. 25, 2025) inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, leaving several fighters feeling the post-fight blues. Among them was Aleksandar Rakic, who suffered his fourth straight loss after he was knocked out by Azamat Murzakanov in the very first round (see it again here).
