Jamaica is bracing for Melissa, currently a Category 5 hurricane, to make landfall Tuesday morning on the island.
As a Category 5 storm, Hurricane Melissa left a path of destruction across Jamaica. The worst hurricane to hit the island made landfall on Oct. 28, and resulted in devastating flooding, mudslides, power outages, and food shortages. And the effects are expected to last into the coming months.
Evan Thompson, principal director of Jamaica's meteorological service, said Tuesday morning that rainfall and wind gusts have started in parts of the country as Hurricane Melissa moves closer. Thompson, who warned of 'catastrophic' damage, said the storm is expected to make landfall as a Category 5 hurricane.
