Qatar says Afghanistan and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire amid a cross-border conflict that has been the deadliest in years.

The now-uneasy neighbors exchanged fire again on Friday, Taliban-controlled media reported, days after agreeing to a ceasefire and talks this weekend in Qatar.

Afghanistan and Pakistan said they had agreed a 48-hour ceasefire on Wednesday, following days of deadly clashes between the neighbors and former allies.

Cross-border fighting between Pakistan and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan reached a fever pitch, with Pakistan carrying out airstrikes in Kabul.
